ENGLISH

It is no secret that we live in an increasingly connected world, and not precisely because of technology, but because of the phenomenon of migration, which throughout history has brought together cultures from around the world.

The Farewell (2019), directed by Lulu Wang, is a reflection of the cultural exchange between two countries through family, a social institution.

Billi, a young woman with existential problems, decides to go to her native China after learning that her family plans to fake a wedding to have one last reunion with her grandmother, who is suffering from terminal cancer.

This news becomes a debate about the cultural differences between the United States and China.

This is because the news is a breaking point between morals and cultural differences.

On one side we have Billi, who grew up in the United States, and seeks to tell his grandmother the truth because he believes that lying to her is wrong, while the rest of his family, rooted in their customs, see it as ideal, and do not consider it to be a vile lie.

When Billi learns that his grandmother is about to die, his father tells him that in China it is believed that when a sick person knows he is about to die, fear accelerates the process.

Throughout the film, cultural relativism is raised through exceptional dramatic scenes, where Billi's family, who live in China, talk about the wonders of China and the misfortunes of the United States.

Another part also highlights the comparison, when a hotel clerk asks Billi which country is better, to which she replies: it's different.

This is not a way to escape the question, but the most practical way to give an answer to something so complex, which requires many nuances to get a reasonable opinion about it.

In fact, in my opinion, this is what The Farewell is, a sensible film, with beautiful photography, contemplative shots, and subtle movements, giving it a minimalist narrative with extraordinary dialogue.

It is through this story that the complicated relationship between two different cultures, which at the same time, share a culture thanks to migration as a social phenomenon, is summarized in an intelligent way, through the family as a social nucleus.
