For a few years I had Michael Bay on my black list, or rather, on my list of filmmakers to avoid, along with "luminaries" like the late Tony Scott or the also late Joel Schumacher. However, in this film Bay hardly seems like him, there are moments when it is undeniable that it is him. This is something good that I hope will be repeated.

Still, I have to say that what motivated me to see this movie is, of course, Ryan Reynolds, who, as always, plays Ryan Reynolds, and if one goes with those expectations, 6 Underground (2019) does not disappoint, although here we don't have the usual Ryan Reynolds but one who is a little fed up with everything, with an expression that makes us wait for a sneeze that never comes, serious as a dog in a boat. Maybe it's how the guy casts the character, in this case, a billionaire who plays dead but keeps his billions to fight crime.

He recruits five more people, helps them arrange their respective deaths, and assigns a number to each one: Two is the former CIA agent, Three is the hired assassin, Four is the mountebank, Five is the doctor (in case anyone needs one. aspirin or open heart surgery) and Six the driver. There is the cool guy who, despite being recruited at the last moment, ends up changing the rules and showing that he knows them all.

The first one to die is the driver, a guy who is a kind of Baby Driver but more likable. The strange thing is that instead of replacing him with another driver, they replace him with a sniper, who may not know how to drive. I guess from now on the group will go to their missions by taxi.

The film begins with an interesting chase through Milan that lasts about 15 minutes, which is a long time but in this case it's time well spent and serves as both an introduction to the sextet and a farewell to poor Six. One recruits Seven, the sniper. Again: why not a driver? We already had two assassins, and with Seven it's three, which is a lot for only a total of six operatives. But well, let's continue.

The billionaire, who acts as a computer genius and made his fortune selling magnets, has a list of dictators and other scourges and plans to kill them to make the world a better place. The problem is that both he and his acolytes are just getting started in being self-employed for justice, and this adventure begins and ends as a kind of Year One with an impossible mission resolved with a blowout, under the auspices of Murphy's Law.

The plot of this first mission is relatively simple: oust a tyrant from an uncertain Balkan country and put the good and democratic brother in his place. Ah, that mania of the US and their films for getting into where they are not called to... which is evident here because before the CIA was in charge of removing the good brother from circulation, the same one who now must be supported, at least unofficially.

So we have a setup similar to any Mission: Impossible, but a little less believable, and solved with a lot of CGI, (which is cheaper today than in the past) a second film crew filming in some european cities, and then we have the usual: car chases, stunts, a bit of romance and lots and lots of luck, the occasional forced coincidence and a total disregard for the laws of physics.

And the thing is resolved, it is well filmed, Who are you? and what have you done with the real Michael Bay? with competent actors and a Mélanie Laurent who does not disappoint and looks very hot. In summary: the film is entertaining, enjoyable, but it has that movie of the week whiff that doesn't quite convince, a feeling that is increased with Ryan Reynolds who is a bit (too) serious. Don't expect a sequel, because nonetheless, the Netflix brains decided there wouldn't be one. Do I recommend it? Yes, see it with friends, pizza and beer.
