Hello to all lovers of the seventh art. I am taking up the thread of my promise to watch one movie at least once a week, so that I can share with you some material that may be of interest.

I have to confess that I watched this movie blindly. I somehow prefer not to know its background so as not to arrive predisposed and enjoy the film. Obviously, if I will see it in the theater at least I know who are the protagonists and the director, but in this weekly exercise, I try to choose at random.

I was struck by the cover of the post, which features Kirsten Dunst, because I was unfamiliar with her filmography (I admit I was clueless at the time) and this along with the name encouraged me to see it.

The first thing I loved was the 70's era setting. The use of ochre colors already puts us in tune with what to expect from the plot.

This film, the first by director Sofia Coppola, dates from 1999. And it tells us about the life of a family in some American suburb, in which there are 5 daughters, all beautiful, but at the same time unattainable.

One of the phrases that I loved and that subtly explains the meaning of the plot is the one said by one of the neighbors: nobody could explain how it was possible that the Lisbon family had such perfect daughters (it is not literal, because I did not copy it XD, but it is the idea that they want to express).

The idea of the perfect family, with house, car and daughters not only pretty but outstanding students, is a summary of what socially we all aspire to. But trying to maintain appearances in the eyes of society can be too much of a burden for some of its members.

In this case, the first point of return (breaking down the script) is in the suicide of the youngest of the girls, which radically changes what we can expect from the film.

While the name tells us that death will be present, the intrigue is in the why and how the events will happen. The presence of the parents, rarely and punctually, gives us the clues to mentally put together a theory about how everything will end.

We must always keep in mind that the story is set in the 70s, just after the hippie boom of a decade ago, so it is on the border between the debauchery and freedom of action of young people, and the need to regain some social stability on the part of the older generations.

The duality that always manifests itself between parents and children, who having experienced certain realities in their youth, pretend that their children do not repeat their mistakes or act differently, for the sake of making others learn from past experiences is drawn with almost invisible brushstrokes throughout the plot.

One of the things that made a bit of noise to me is that in the authority figures, it is the mother who calls the shots at home, and the father is a simple provider and driver for the girls. For although it coincides with the era of women's liberation, in the family aspect the man was still the one who put the final points.

The "docility" presented by the daughters at home has its counterpart outside the home. Being all teenagers, it is complicated that this was their true personality, however, the need to maintain appearances for their mother, leads them to present a double life quite complex to maintain for a long time.

The presence of the neighbors, witnesses of everything, is a key piece, since they are the ones who narrate as spectators what the others thought of the mysterious life that was lived inside the Lisbon house. They are the ones who, in part, make bearable the confinement to which these girls were subjected, and who unfortunately discover what was their plan to get out of the "cage" in which they had been put.

Here comes a small spoiler, because this film reflects a reality that is very common in families with teenagers, since they are two different stages that often generate conflicts between parents and children. And although its purpose is not to lecture, I think that if you analyze it with a vision of motherhood / parenthood, it tells us how much more attentive we should be to our children, to understand them and let them grow, make mistakes and learn from life by their own means.

WHAT I LIKED

For me, Katheleen Turner's performance. Although she appears very few times, she is the axis of the whole plot. If we pay special attention to her, all the pieces fit together.

The portrayal of the rebelliousness of the girls, especially Dunst, very much in keeping with the era. Always defiant without becoming violent.

The first plot twist. Although already the title predisposes you that there is going to be a suicide, I didn't really expect it so soon.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE

Although Lux's story is the one that turns out to be the most moving, the other girls seemed more like filler within the plot.

The "testimonials" that weren't from the neighbors. They seemed to me to be overdone.

The film itself was not made with the intention of making millions and it shows. It's more of an experimental, low-budget type of film, which often gives us pleasant surprises.

Hola a todos los amantes del séptimo arte. Yo retomando el hilo de mi promesa de ver por lo menos una película una vez a la semana, para poder compartir con ustedes algún material que pueda ser de interés.

He de confesar que vi esta película a ciegas. Prefiero de algún modo no saber sus antecedentes para no llegar predispuesta y disfrutar del film. Obviamente, si la veré en el cine por lo menos conozco quienes son los protagonistas y el director, pero en este ejercicio semanal, trato de elegir al azar.

Me llamó la atención la portada del post, en el que aparece Kirsten Dunst, porque no se me hacía familiar dentro de su filmografía (reconozco que estaba despistada en ese momento) y esto junto con el nombre me animó a verla.

Lo primero que me encantó fue la ambientación en la época de los años 70. El uso de colores ocres ya nos pone en sintonía con respecto a lo que se puede esperar de la trama.

Esta película, la primera de la directora Sofia Coppola, data del año 1999. Y nos relata la vida de una familia de algún suburbio norteamericano, en la que hay 5 hijas, todas hermosas, pero a la vez inalcanzables.

Una de las frases que me encantó y que explica sutilmente el sentido de la trama es la que dice uno de los vecinos: nadie se explicaba como era posible que la familia Lisbon tuviera unas hijas tan perfectas. (no es literal, pues no la copié XD, pero es la idea que quieren manifestar)

La idea de la familia perfecta, con casa, carro e hijas no solo lindas sino destacadas estudiantes, es un resumen de lo que socialmente aspiramos todos. Pero tratar de mantener una fachada ante la sociedad, puede resultar un peso demasiado grande para algunos de sus miembros.

En este caso, el primer punto de retorno (desglosando el guión) está en el suicidio de la menor de las chicas, lo cual cambia radicalmente lo que podemos esperar de la película.

Si bien el nombre nos indica que la muerte estará presente, la intriga está en el por qué y el cómo sucederán los hechos. La presencia de los padres pocas veces y de forma puntual, nos da los indicios para armar mentalmente alguna teoría sobre cómo terminará todo.

Hay que tener siempre presente que la historia está ambientada en los años 70, justo después del boom hippie de una década atrás, por lo que está en la frontera entre el desenfreno y la libertad de acción de los jóvenes, y la necesidad de retomar cierta estabilidad social de parte de las generaciones mayores.

La dualidad que se manifiesta siempre entre padres e hijos, quienes habiendo experimentado en su juventud ciertas realidades, pretenden que sus hijos no repitan sus errores o actúen de manera distinta, por aquello de hacer que los demás aprendan por las experiencias pasadas está dibujado con pinceladas casi invisibles a lo largo de la trama.

Una de las cosas que me hizo un poco de ruido es que en las figuras de autoridad, es la madre quien lleva la batuta en casa, y el padre es un simple proveedor y chofer de las chicas. Pues aunque coincide con la época de la liberación femenina, en el aspecto familiar el hombre era quien seguía poniendo los puntos finales.

La "docilidad" presentada por las hijas en casa, tiene su contraparte fuera de ella. Siendo todas adolescentes, es complicado que realmente fuera esa su verdadera personalidad, sin embargo, la necesidad de mantener una fachada para su madre, las lleva a presentar una doble vida bastante compleja de mantener por mucho tiempo.

La presencia de los vecinos testigos de todo, es una pieza clave, pues ellos son quienes narran como espectadores lo que los demás pensaban de la misteriosa vida que se vivía dentro de la casa Lisbon. Son ellos quienes en parte, hacen llevadero el encierro al que fueron sometidas estas chicas, y quienes lamentablemente descubren cual era el plan de ellas para salir de la "jaula" en la que las habían metido.

Aquí viene un pequeño spoiler, pues esta película refleja una realidad que es muy común en las familias con adolescentes, ya que son dos etapas dispares que suelen generar conflictos entre padres e hijos. Y aunque su finalidad no es aleccionar, considero que si la analizas con visión de maternidad/paternidad, nos dice cuanto más atentos debemos estar de nuestros hijos, para entenderlos y dejarlos crecer, equivocarse y aprender de la vida por sus propios medios.

LO QUE ME GUSTÓ

Para mi, la actuación de Katheleen Turner. Ya que aunque sale muy pocas veces, es el eje de toda la trama. Si le ponemos especial atención, todas las piezas encajan solas.

La representación de la rebeldía de las chicas, especialmente de Dunst, muy acorde con la época. Siempre desafiante sin llegar a ser violenta.

El primer giro argumental. Aunque ya el título te predispone a que va a haber un suicidio, realmente no lo esperaba tan pronto.

LO QUE NO ME GUSTÓ

Aunque la historia de Lux es la que resulta más movida, las demás chicas parecían más un relleno dentro de la trama.

Los "testimoniales" que no fueron de los vecinos. Me parecían que estaban de más.

La película en sí no estuvo hecha con la intención de facturar millones y eso se ve. Es más del tipo del cine experimental y de bajo presupuesto, que en muchas oportunidades nos da gratas sorpresas.
