The Fifth Element (1997) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

I barely remember the first time I saw this movie. It was when I was a child, and until recently, I could only remember a few scenes here and there. What I did recognize quickly was the cast of actors, since Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and Chris Tucker are faces I've seen many times on television since I was a child in action movies. That's why I haven't completely forgotten the name of this movie, recognizing how influential it became in a certain part of my life. However, I'm not saying that it's one of those movies that I would recommend watching right now. The Fifth Element is the worst and at the same time the most entertaining movie I've seen in a long time, so what I'm going to say from now on can be taken as both a negative and a positive review. It all depends on your taste in movies.

Starting with the story, it's one of those that directly mocks any other space and futuristic science fiction story that exists today. The idea of an evil entity that appears every five thousand years to destroy the universe is something that seems straight out of a comic book, and the same can be said about the weapon they use to destroy it. While its premise is somewhat striking, what really grabs your attention is its humorous tone, which conveys a clear message that everything you will see in this film is simply a parody. What happens throughout the two hours of footage is a race against time followed by a chase, after a chance encounter between a red-haired girl and a simple taxi driver who turns out to be a retired ex-military man. For her part, this girl is "the fifth element", the weapon that humanity will need to defeat the terrible evil that is approaching like an "intelligent" space fireball.

Apenas recuerdo la primera vez que ví esta película. Fue cuando era niño y hasta hace poco siquiera pude recordar una que otra escena nomás. Lo que sí llegué a reconocer rápidamente es al elenco de actores, ya que tanto Bruce Willis como Milla Jovovich y Chris Tucker han sido caras que he visto muchísimas veces en la televisión desde pequeño en películas de acción. Es por eso que el nombre de esta película no la he olvidado por completo al reconocer lo influyente que llegó a ser en cierta parte de mi vida. Sin embargo, con esto no estoy diciendo que sea de esas películas que vaya a recomendar ver desde ya. The Fifth Element es de lo peor y a la vez lo más entretenido que he visto en mucho tiempo, así que lo que voy a decir de ahora en adelante lo puedes tomar como una crítica tanto negativa como también positiva. Todo dependerá de tus gustos por el cine.

Empezando por su historia, es de esas que directamente se burlan de cualquier otra historia de ciencia ficción espacial y futurista que existe en la actualidad. La idea de una entidad malvada que aparece cada cinco mil años para acabar con el universo es algo que parece sacado de un cómic, lo mismo se puede decir con el tema del arma que utilizan para acabar con ella. Si bien llama un poco la atención su premisa, lo que verdaderamente atrapa es su tono humorístico que transmite un claro mensaje de que todo lo que verán en esta película es una simple parodia. Lo que sucede a lo largo de las dos horas de metraje es una carrera contra el tiempo seguido de una persecución, tras un encuentro oportuno de una chica de cabello rojizo con un simple taxista que resulta ser un ex-militar retirado. Por su parte, esta chica es “el quinto elemento”, el arma que la humanidad va a necesitar para acabar con el terrible mal que se avecina como una bola de fuego espacial “inteligente”.

Yes, all this sounds like any old science fiction action movie, which is true. But what you end up seeing is a universe full of chaos, madness, shady deals, and mafias seeking to control everything. Despite how striking this vision of the future is, it's actually a somewhat crazy attempt to create a unique story with the best of both genres in one place. However, I believe that both the performances and the excessive use of dark humor and absurd moments detract from what little seriousness this story may have. But don't worry, you're not missing anything new that hasn't been done before or since this feature film: a futuristic, dystopian universe doomed to destruction and humanity proving until the end that it is not worthy of being saved. Now that I think about it, the film also abounds in clichés from typical action movies. One example is its ending, which has one of those usual "Deus Ex-Machina" moments.

Now let's talk a little about the work done by the great cast of actors in this film. Starting with Bruce Willis, we see his younger side, closer to his golden age, playing the typical protagonist who ends up saving the world. This oft-seen version of the heroic, rebellious, impulsive, strong, and tough character suits him very well, especially in this film. On the other hand, we also have a young Milla Jovovich, playing one of her leading roles that became popular due to her talent for kicking ass in unforgettable action sequences. Nothing more to say, apart from her poor performance as the ultimate weapon and the "perfect being". At that time, it seems that Hollywood didn't care about exposing actresses just to get attention. We also have Gary Oldman as the villain of the film, another actor who is quite talented, especially playing antagonists in action films. However, he doesn't stand out as much as expected here, to be honest, even though he does his best.

Si, todo esto suena a una película de ciencia ficción y acción cualquiera, lo cual es cierto. Pero lo que se puede llegar a ver es un universo repleto de caos, locura, negocios turbios y mafias que buscan controlarlo todo. A pesar de lo llamativa que es esta visión del futuro, en realidad es un intento un tanto alocado de crear una historia única con lo mejor de ambos géneros en uno solo lugar. Sin embargo, considero que tanto las actuaciones como el uso excesivo del humor negro y los momentos absurdos le quitan la poca seriedad que puede llegar a tener esta historia. Pero no se preocupen, no se pierden de nada nuevo que no se haya hecho antes o después de este largometraje: un universo futurista y distópico que está condenada a la destrucción y la humanidad demostrando hasta el final que no es digna de ser salvada. Ahora que lo pienso mejor, la película abunda también en tener clichés de típicas películas de acción. Un ejemplo es su final, el cual tiene uno de esos “Deus Ex-Machina” de siempre.

Ahora hablemos un poco del trabajo que realiza el gran elenco de actores que tiene esta película. Empezando por Bruce Willis, vemos su lado más jóven y cercano a su época dorada interpretando al típico protagonista que termina salvando el mundo. Esta versión muchas veces vista del heróico, rebelde, impulsivo, fuerte y rudo personaje le queda muy bien y más en esta cinta en especial. Por otro lado, tenemos a Milla Jovovich de jóven también, actuando en uno de sus principales papeles que se volvieron populares debido a su talento para dar palizas en secuencias de acción inolvidables. Nada más que decir, aparte de su pobre actuación como el arma definitiva y el “ser perfecto”. En esa época parece que Hollywood le daba igual desnudar a actrices solo para llamar la atención. También tenemos a Garry Oldman como el villano de la película, otro actor que tiene bastante talento, sobre todo haciendo de antagonista en cintas de acción. Sin embargo, aquí no se destaca tanto como se espera, la verdad, aunque hace su mayor esfuerzo.

And how can we not mention Chris Tucker, an actor who, in almost every film he appears in, makes it clear that he is the typical extravagant, funny, womanizing, and super expressive character we are used to seeing. I think here we can see him playing that character at his best. Something worth noting is the complete freedom these actors had in this film, which is crazy. As for the rest, I don't want to talk about the other characters we see in this film because I'd end up sending a message of hatred and bad taste that I'd rather spare myself. I'll just say that both the script and the number of humorous scenes and absurd moments take away all the seriousness from even characters who are supposed to be serious. An incompetent president, an inefficient priest, a realistic US army, and space enemies who are disgusting both visually and in their entirety. I think that, apart from the main characters, there isn't a single character in this movie who isn't absurdly humiliated in some way.

But anyway, despite all this and other details I could mention, I admit that the two hours I spent watching this movie were as entertaining as could be expected. Maybe it's because my sense of humor is broken or simply because I'm a fan of Bruce Willis and seeing him fight aliens in true Die Hard style while romancing Milla Jovovich so that they end up together in the end (it's not a spoiler, it's just a cliché). Yes, it has its iconic scene that more than one person who remembers it will surely know, as it even has an excellent action sequence at the end featuring the Resident Evil actress. But the rest is sequence after sequence of absurd things, jokes, awkward moments, and nonsense. If you're also a fan of american humor and 90s action, then this movie might be perfect for you. Again, this is not a recommendation as such.

Y cómo no hablar de Chris Tucker, un actor que en casi todas las películas que participa deja en claro que lo suyo es el típico personaje extravagante, gracioso, mujeriego y súper expresivo de siempre. Creo que aquí podemos verlo interpretar a dicho personaje en su máximo esplendor. Algo a destacar es la completa libertad que tenían estos actores en esta obra, una locura. De resto, no quiero hablar de los demás personajes que vemos en esta película porque sino termino dando un mensaje de odio y mal gusto que prefiero ahorrarme, mejor. Solo diré que tanto el guión como la cantidad de escenas de humor y momentos absurdos le quitan toda la seriedad hasta a personajes que se supone deben de serlo. Un presidente incompetente, un sacerdote ineficiente, un ejército estadounidense fiel a la realidad y enemigos espaciales que dan asco tanto de manera visual como en su totalidad. Creo que, dejando de lado a los protagonistas, no hay un personaje que sea absurdamente humillado en alguna forma de esta película.

Pero bueno, a pesar de todo esto y más detalles que puedo llegar a mencionar, admito que estas dos horas que pasé viendo esta película fue de lo más entretenido que se pudo esperar. Tal vez y sea porque mi sentido del humor está roto o simplemente porque soy fan de Bruce Willis y de verlo luchar contra extraterrestres al puro estilo de Duro de Matar mientras enamora a Milla Jovovich para que al final terminen juntos (no es un spoiler, es solo un cliché). Si, tiene su escena mítica que seguramente más de uno que la recuerde sabrá cuál es ya que incluso tiene al final una excelente secuencia de acción de la actriz de Resident Evil. Pero de resto son secuencia tras secuencia de cosas absurdas, chistes, momentos incómodos y sin sentido. Si eres fan también del humor estadounidense y de la acción de los años 90s, entonces esta película puede ser perfecta para tí. Repito, no es una recomendación como tal.

Last but not least, let's talk about the technical and visual aspects of this film. For the time in which it was produced and released, it's not bad at all. The static shots, camera movements, captures, and views of the Egyptian desert or the futuristic city of New York are top-notch. There is also the use of practical and computer-generated visual effects (CGI) that look very decent. The makeup, costumes, and extravagant clothing styles that show the futuristic nature of this dystopian world are also worth noting. The same goes for the action sequences, explosions, and sound effects. The soundtrack is not the best in the world, nor does it stand out as much as other classics of the science fiction genre, but it does manage to convey what is sought in each scene. In short, as I said before, this is a cult film perfect for those who want to laugh and just have a good time.

Personally, I give it a rating of 7/10 in terms of the science fiction and action genre.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado técnico y visual de esta película. Para la época en la que se produjo y se estrenó no está para nada mal. Las tomas fijas, los movimientos de cámara, las capturas y vistas del desierto de Egipto o la ciudad futurista de Nueva York son de lo mejor. También está el uso de efectos visuales prácticos y hechos a computadora (CGI) que se ven muy decentes. El maquillaje, los trajes y los estilos de vestimenta extravagantes que muestran lo futurista de este mundo distópico es algo que también se debe destacar. Lo mismo sucede con las secuencias de acción, las explosiones y los efectos de sonido. La banda sonora no es la mejor del mundo ni resalta tanto como otros clásicos del género de la ciencia ficción, pero sí consigue transmitir lo que se busca en cada escenario. En fin, como ya dije antes, esta es una película de culto perfecta para el que quiera reírse y pasar el rato nomás.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7/10 en lo que respecta al género de ciencia ficción y acción.
