In 1995, I along with other colleagues at my work had a VHS video store where action and martial arts movies were in high demand, the previous year two martial arts movies based on video games called Double Dragon and Street Fighter were in high demand.

Needless to say that before renting the movies, they were watched by us, of the first film I saw the only thing I would rescue are the fight scenes in which acts actively a B action hero and martial arts expert who has had a very irregular career in the movies Mark Dacascos. As for Street Fighter for me it was a total disappointment and a very cartoonish film especially the performances of Jean Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia, in his last film role. Even being a pale caricature of the character of Bison, every time Julia appears in the film he eats Van Damme with french fries. Already on VHS I had seen a very nice reference to the game in the 1993 Jackie Chan movie called City Hunter.

Going into the subject, I must say that at the time I had my Play Station I console, and my favorite game was Mortal Kombat.

In those early Mortal Kombat games I took on various roles such as Johnny Cage, Raiden, Liu Kang, Scorpion, and even Sonya Blade! I would spend hours glued to the screen trying to get through levels and stages like The Courtyard, Palace Gates, Warriors Shrine, The Pit, Shang Tsung's Throneroom, Goro's Lair, and Pit Bottom.

Buying several VHS tapes to add to the video club I came across Mortal Kombat, its purchase was mandatory for commercial reasons, however, fear began to grip me as I was reminded of those two failed and horrible video game adaptations. Additionally, the only actor I knew in the film was the highlander Christopher Lambert.

I put the VHS tape in my player and started to watch the intro, and by then I started to get disillusioned with that music, a song called Techno Syndrome that I had heard before because in certain radios in my country, Venezuela, they were in charge of playing it almost all day long.

The images of the actors and the locations of the film arrive, I was amazed, changing my perception of the film, there are carefully choreographed fights and very good special effects in times when video game adaptations were in their infancy. Note that although the music is pounding, it is a very good accompaniment to the action scenes.

The plot is very simple: a series of extraordinary fighters compete to become champions of the Mortal Kombat tournament and destroy, or save, the world.

Earth is protected by Raiden, (the god of thunder), played by Christopher Lambert, who contacts Liu Kang the best warrior in the world played by Robin Shou, and later allies himself with Johnny Cage a martial arts movie star played by Linden Ashby and Sonya Blade a special forces agent played by Bridgette Wilson, becoming the guardian of the 3 participants from the Earth realm to participate in the Mortal Kombat tournament. But Liu Kang is more obsessed with the revenge of his brother Chan Kang killed by Shang Tsung.

These three heroes must face Sub-Zero who is an expert fighter who has the power to control ice played by Francois Pettit , Scorpio a wraith ninja who in the video game seeks revenge against Sub-Zero is played by Chris Casamassa, but here he is one of the allies of the evil Shan Tsung and works together with Sub-Zero, Reptile a spy and bodyguard last of his race played here by Keith Cooke, Kano a criminal mercenary played by Trevor Goddard, who is pursued by Sonya Blade, and of course Shang Tsung.

The movie lives up to the video game it adapts, although the combat is less gory. It is effective and succeeds in giving background to its main characters, has an imaginative design with Thai exteriors and extensive sets with exotic palaces.

Shan Tsung is played by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and I think he is the most outstanding actor in the film, you can tell he enjoyed his role.

Very impressive, I found Scorpion and Sub Zero thanks to a very transgressive CGI for the time coupled with the appearance of characters completely created in digital animation and animatronics as Goro.

As a curious fact, it is said that the late Brandon Lee signed for the film before his death, and that Cameron Diaz already had the role of Sonya Blade but in training she got injured and was left out of the project. Jean Claude Van Damme turned down the role of Johnny Cage and preferred to film Street Fighter.

The film became a worldwide success with 122 million dollars at the worldwide box office. The film was directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, well known for directing almost all the films of the Resident Evil saga in which the protagonist is his wife Milla Jovovich.

An epic ending and ripe for a very forgettable sequel.

Seen today the special effects look very outdated, but in its time it gave a lot to talk about, highlighting that Goro always looked like a big puppet.

Pasaba hora pegado a la pantalla intentando sortear niveles y escenarios como The Courtyard, Palace Gates,Warriors Shrine, The Pit, Shang Tsung's Throneroom, Goro's Lair, y Pit Bottom.

This is a game that has a large community of followers, but personally I didn't like it, neither the movie nor the game, of course I respect your opinion, and I really liked how you talk about the movie.

Now the most recent versions of the movie are very different and the effects are totally different from the classic effects of the old movies, it's a pleasure to read your review my friend. !PIZZA

Thanks for stopping by @zonadigital21. I respect your opinion, and I recognize that the publication reflects the nostalgia for that game and the movie. At that time the special effects of the film were very impressive, today next to the new technologies can be even laughable, the reboot of Mortal Kombat is good but the original movie is more faithful to the game. Note that I do not mention neither the following movies nor the series because I consider them very bad. Best regards.

I really like this movie, I really like that every fight scene has electronic music, it's very exciting, also the setting is very dark, for example when Johnny faces Scorpion, not in the forest but when they are inside, they fight with a lot of human bones on the ground, I also like the scary look they give Goru, when I was a kid his appearance really scared me, now it's kind of funny because obviously both the makeup and current special effects are better but I like it the old look, you could tell they went above and beyond to create a horror look
