Sidelined - The Peripheral

Some shows I never start because they have shit covers. Other shows I never start because they have great covers but it feels like something for the sheeple... Either way, until now I never started The Peripheral although many times I have paused on it while perusing.

Eventually, I did.

I have not seen any reviews yet, but I will assume they are all good. It seems IMDB rates it at 8.3 which is just a lukewarm indicator. That rating might mean it is particularly pathetic and geared to only snowflakes. It may also mean that there is something of substance but even if not then at least it won't feel cheap.

The latter is definitely the case for me.

I liked The Peripheral because it actually did not try too hard. It has a story and slowly it is telling it. Possibly a bit slow in some parts but luckily I have no qualms with skipping bits.

One of the things that they quickly address is the idea that it is just some shallow twist on a VR world.

The Peripheral felt like it could even go into 1899 territory with the almost convoluted timeline. Then all the tech and sci-fi gets pulled back and you get some great Banshee vibes.

Possibly they could have taken the Banshee violence further but I think it keeps everything on track and ties off any loose ends quickly and with as little violence as is required.

It is that balance which is appreciated in shows like this, and hopefully, there is a season 2 because in simple terms: "Shit is going to go down."

On the surface, it may not seems as much of a minefield but this show definitely crafts a maze with some conveniences in some cases but generally just because of the inherent complexities one gets when fiddling with time.

Another thing that makes it worth following is how the story is still cemented in a world with consequences. The payoff comes every time someone throws caution to the wind.

So all in all I am looking forward to season two, with a little bit more sci-fi and mind games but expecting some Matrix-style ass-whoopings to be handed out.

First thing I said to myself (out loud because that's what happens when you become a hermit) when I saw your post was

"Oh goody!"

And then I read the first line and threw my head back and laughed out loud :D

Nice one and thanks for the heads up! It sounds interesting. Especially your spin on consequences.

Officially intrigued.

I really liked it... I'd read a bit of William Gibson so that understanding added to my appreciation and understanding of the series.

Interesting! I will give a shot on that

Yeah, I enjoyed it too and I enjoyed 1899 to a point. Basically when I saw it wasn't going to explain anything and just teased the second season as a whole new sim was when I got mad.

Anyhow, I really liked Hit Girl in The Peripheral. She was my favourite part of Kick Ass.

Yeah she was good in Kick Ass, haha agreed 1899 did muck the end up a bit but looking forward to some cool scifi hopefully. !PIZZA !LOLZ
