My Favourite Movie: Dinner At My Place

I have seen countless movies this year, ranging from African to South African series, Korean, American and Ghanian movies. Some of these movies were quite interesting. Although a lot of us likes action but much more, the creativity is something I really value, which is why my favourite movie is “Dinner at My Place” (despite seeing movies like Brotherhood, Gangs of Lagos, Wura series, among others).

‘Dinner At my place’ is a simple movie but well crafted with a lot of suspense. As the name suggests, the story revolves around a man inviting a lady (his girlfriend) over to his place for dinner. His intention was to propose to the said lady. However, his ex-girlfriend gate crashed!

The movie kicked off with a romantic scene where two lovers, Nonso and Chioma, were having a good time at the beach, went to other places to have fun and finally retired to the guy's place (and no, it’s not what you think, little romance but no s*x). After the fun and experience they had, it was obvious that Nonso was really in love and wanted to put a ring on it as the next scene showed him checking out a well-packaged ring which his mother gave him before her demise – he planned proposing to Chioma with the same ring (aw awwn, moving on).

In order to achieve his desire without any shocker or disappointment (aka a successful proposal to his girlfriend), Nonso decided to consult his friend, Jay and his girlfriend’s friend, Cynthia to help him plan a surprise dinner party at his place. He also double-checked with them to know if the timing is right and to avoid a heartbreaking no, to which they affirmed that he can go ahead (hello guys, never propose without cross-checking winks).

With the help of Jay, Cynthia and his good cooking skills, our hero (Nonso) arranged a colorful dinner for his angel (Chioma). The roses, the lights, the aroma and other beautiful ideas made the dinner setting a tantalizing one. The initial plan was to have the two helpers (Jay and Cynthia) hide in a room, while he reads a romantic speech to Chioma, brings out the ring and then the helpers show up while Chioma says yes or something like that. However, they never made arrangement for an uninvited guest as no one was expected except the 4 attendees.

Nonso, the romantic boyfriend, was rehearsing his speech at the dinner table when he heard a knock at the door, it’s Chioma, his girlfriend. Out of anxiety, he dropped the proposal ring in a pot of soup! To make matters worse, he literally covered the ring in soup (I guess his thought was to let his girlfriend bite on the ring and spew it out all leading to a romantic ending, sorry, that never happened). He fumbled his way to the door and opened, welcoming Chioma with a frightened grin all over his face.

As Chioma served the food and Nonso stared at her plate, expecting that she’ll ‘serve the ring’, chew a metal and spew, then he goes on his knees— someone rang the bell at the door! This interrupted and disrupted the whole feeling, his expectation was cut short! Although he wanted to ignore but later had no choice than to check the uninvited guest. He opened the door and ‘saw a ghost of the future past’, his ex-girlfriend! “Bisi what are you doing here?”, he asked?

It turned out Bisi had a heated argument with her roommate which almost led to a serious fight, so she needed a place to crash for the night! (why his place? That’s my question. Then why that night?) As Nonso was staying too long at the door, Chioma had to check what was going on and after realizing what was going on, she convinced Nonso to allow Bisi stay “on the couch” (hello girlfriends never allow this, NEVER).

Back to the problem at hand, the ring was still in the soup! As Nonso tried to check with Cynthia and Jay in the room where they were ‘hiding’, Bisi, decided to help herself with some food at the dinner table. Then, something got stuck to her throat and she was almost choking on it! Nonso came out in time and was shocked to realize what has happened. After taking a cup of water, Bisi swallowed ‘the thing’ stuck to her throat! Nonso immediately started searching the pot of soup for his ring which was disgusting to Chioma (oblivious of what was going on). Nonso had to later let the cat out of the bag!

Nonso quickly dragged Bisi (his ex) to the kitchen and explained the whole dilemma to her. She pleaded with her to take some laxative so she can pass the ring out with faeces! Bisi’s hilarious response was “so you’ll propose to your girlfriend with a st ring, my sh?” She added that she wasn’t ready to stress herself for some ring. Nonso had to come out that the ring is worth $22,000! This changed Bisi’s thought and she started thinking of ways to escape with the ring. Not just because the ring was expensive but because there was a time, she almost got a proposal from Nonso before they broke up and it was the same ring he was going to use, so she’s the rightful owner! By the way, they broke up because, Nonso was broke, she’s a gold digger y’all!

The surprise party later turned out a surprise! So, Nonso informed everyone on what was going on. They all had to find a solution, so he shared his plan and they gave suggestions which gave a direction.

Jay got the laxative from a supermarket while Nonso, Cynthia and Chioma secured ‘the treasure’ (Bisi), who was trying to escape in order to sell the ring. After taking the laxative, she purged severely (thanks to Jay and Nonso for doubling her dose for a quick result) but they still couldn’t get the ring. As it’s already late in the night, they resorted to getting an x-ray scan in the morning while Bisi stays at Nonso’s place.

Cynthia had to leave as she’s going to work in the morning. With Nonso and Chioma in bed, Jay decided to guard the treasure (Bisi), so he slept at the living room and used Bisi’s bag as his pillow. After everyone was asleep, Bisi sneaked out, luckily got her phone out of her bag, also took the key to the entrance doors and escaped. She’s broke, so she had to borrow money from her friend, lodged in a hotel till morning and later went for an x-ray scan. The result showed that “the ring” she thought she swallowed was actually a bone!

Later in the morning, Nonso, Jay and Chioma discovered that Bisi had escaped. Amidst the pain and passing of blame. Chioma saw something shining in the pot of soup and (you guessed right), it’s the ring! The owner found her ring (or vice versa)!

Out of greed, Bisi made several unexpected attempts to get the ring but failed. A happy ending for Nonso and Chioma. Jay and Cynthia later fell in love. THE END
