The good wife

The good wife... drama series that "ran" from 2009 to 2016 with seven seasons. The series is created by Robert and Michelle King. Starring Julianna Margulies as Alicia Florrick in her career best role. Here to say that I refuse to watch the series as the main plot is based on the Clinton scandal and I thought it would be a soap opera. Fortunately I was disproved. The show has really great historiography, acting, character development, and along the way has used real cases from the time it was written in, obviously altered and without the real names, to present us with political issues as well as the chaos that characterizes the American legal system.

The writing team manages to make us care about many characters as we follow their professional and personal struggles, and the supporting cast (featuring Christine Baranski, Archie Panjabi and many other strong names) is equally amazing. And the central romance is really convincing and the chemistry between them is just great!

In addition to the above, it is interesting the way issues of power and privilege are presented and explored as well as the portrayal of female characters who do not fall under the one-dimensional girlboss or angry and bitter etc. They are well-rounded, intelligent characters with their flaws and problems. The series does not want to create feminist idols but to show how complex reality is and how even women who really believe in feminism necessarily act according to the socio-political and work system they live in, as well as the standards they have been raised with and/or their personal experiences (e.g. we often wonder why Alicia doesn't divorce her husband and at the same time we see that she tries to be the opposite of her mother, who has no problem with frequent partner changes). This results in us seeing these characters act against their personal/ideological beliefs in order to survive in the space they are in. This is what makes the series stand out, is human and makes us identify with the characters.

Does she have a belly somewhere?

Yes.

Should it have ended with season five?

Yes.

Does it remain one of the best series of the genre?

Yes.

For me it is one of the best legal/court drama series.

Special mention to the series' many amazing frequent and non-guest stars in alphabetical order:

Alan Cumming: Head of husband's political campaign. God. Simply.

Carrie Preston: Distracted Lawyer Who Turns Out to Be Crazy Talent! We love her!

Dallas Roberts: The Heroine's Gay Brother Who Is The Brother I Wish I Had!

Denis O'Hare: The left judge of our hearts!

Dylan Baker: The womanizer we hate/love (yes, I said it) because he's just such a good actor that he deserves a separate post all his own!

John Benjamin Hickey: Creator of a Google-style search engine, horn capital who reminds me a bit of "I will sit with the youth" style.

Margo Martindale: Briefly replacing Allan Cumming with all that implies for the series development! Big times!

Martha Plimpton: Lawyer who doesn't hesitate to use her children to curry favor with judges and bring her to the stars.

Mary Beth Peil: The mother of the husband... from something like that the name for mothers-in-law has come...

Matthew Lillard: Composer/Songwriter with the Heart of a Little Kid!

Matthew Perry: You want to punch him without a second thought.

Michael J. Fox: Lawyer who does not hesitate to use their health problem to win the favor of judges and juries!

Michael Urie, Zach Woods & Tobias Segal: Guys who work at the NSA (surveill US citizens' phone lines) and could be part of a college fraternity comedy!

Mike Colter: Before he was Luke Cage he was really amazing as a mobster with a very imposing presence and a look that freezes…

Sarah Steele: Daughter of Alan Cumming. Brilliant and incredibly witty! The best friend we want!

I like watching or reading about the American legal system, I've heard about this series when I was much younger, but I thought it was just a soap opera and the title seems rather casual too.

I wonder why we don't have a lot of that these days, I guess sci-fi is taking over
