CineTV Contest: Perry the Platypus
Movies with pets, there are so many of them to choose from, some I have seen, and most I have not seen. There are some that have pet characters that really standout, some of which I have previously written about. With that in mind, I thought I would take a slightly different track and feature a pet from a really cool and fun series – Perry the Platypus from Phineas and Ferb. Perry, posing in his secret identity as a mild-mannered house pet, is actually Agent P of the super-secret espionage group OWCA (Organization Without a Cool Acronym), charged with saving the day by battling evel genius Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz. Both parts of each episode are fun, goofy, and has Doofenshmirtz failing in incredible ways to carry out his various schemes at Tri-City conquest, thanks to a combination of his own bumbling and Agent P spoiling everything else, ending with the accidental cleanup of Phineas and Ferb’s latest ingenious creations much to Candace’s chagrin, and keeping Perry’s secret identity secure.

Sometimes, when watching Phineas and Ferb with my daughter, Little Miss, I can’t help but root for Doofenshmirtz, even though we already know the outcome of his plans – a spectacular Desperate Failure. It’s a matter of seeing how entertaining the failure is that makes the whole thing fun to watch.

Then there is the many variations of “Where’s Perry?” that shows up in each episode, one of the best was when their dad, Lawrence Fletcher, is working on a crossword puzzle with the clue – five letters, “Where’s…?” Hmmm. I think I know what the answer to that one is.
Other things to like about Phineas and Ferb are the many cultural references, like when they get together with Marvel Comics characters to save the day.
The interesting question posed for the CineTV contest this week as part of the contest is – what would the story be like if it featured my pets instead of Perry the Platypus? Aside from not having the educational component of learning about platypuses. And how to spell the plural form of platypus.
We’ll start with our pet cat, Tigerlily. Being a feline hellbent on world domination as all cats are, Agent T would be more likely to help Doofenshmirtz be successful in his own evil plans, rather than trying to defeat his plans, as a means to advance her own nefarious plans of taking over the world. Something that all cats are in favor of, and having success by having their humans do silly human tricks for them (like clean out the litter box). Here’s a shot of Agent T taken by our daughter Little Miss. Agent T is in many ways the ultimate Evil Genius.

Then there is our puppy dog, Jasmine, aka Agent J. She has a special ability to foil Doofenshmirtz’s plans in a peaceful and loving fashion by rolling over on her back, so that she can receive a never-ending belly rub from Doofenshmirtz, thus distracting him from his nefarious plans, resulting in a victory for OWCA. Woof-da! If only all evil geniuses could be so easily defeated.

The downside is that Agent P is a much cooler pet for the role he plays, he looks really cool wearing a Fedora, something Agent T and Agent J would fail at (although Agent J does look cute with reindeer antlers on). Agent P pulls off heroic deeds, while Agent J just rolls over and says “Rub my belly, please”. And, I am sure, Agent P would somehow overcome Agent T’s own neferious plans at world domination at the same time defeating Doofenshmirtz.
