I recently saw the movie Clock, an American drama directed by Alexis Jacknow that tells the story of Ella, a successful interior designer married to a doctor. They seem to be the ideal couple, happy, with a perfect life. The social pressure of not having children at the age of 37 leads her to secretly undergo a medical fertility experiment. A project for which her husband works without her knowledge. After a consultation with the gynecologist, she is persuaded by the doctors and undergoes a treatment to get pregnant and this generates some side effects creating hallucinations.

In the plot, the young girl is confronted with her Jewish ancestors who survived the Nazi holocaust. Her fear of becoming a mother comes from her loyalty to her grandmother who tries to protect her from an inhuman world. Her paranoia leads her to confront her father to the point of taking his life by mistaking him for the clock, a symbol of the passing of time and the legacy of a past from which she wants to dissociate herself.

This film poses a moral problem: science without ethics. The desire for experimentation with humans, without limits, under the complicity of a guild and the authorities regardless of the collateral effects.

On the other hand, it is a psychological drama that raises the conflict of motherhood as an imperative of being a woman. Although some women decide not to be mothers, society questions this practice of the new generations, subjecting them to psychological pressures and treatments that do not always work and can affect their health.

Likewise, it reveals the conservative religious values that conceive the only family model to be one in which there are children. In this sense, if there are no children, there is no family.

The director plays with the image of the clock as a symbol of the passing of time. Time is built from an inheritance of which we are part and we contribute to it, to the extent that we make the right decisions. To this end, he has used the resource of hallucination in the script to place before the spectator the two possible stories that confront each other: the real and the imagined.

As the film's character is an interior designer, the director emphasizes the use of large spaces and a minimalist palette to accentuate the conflict.

What is real is the present. What is in front of your eyes, however every story has at the same time multiple stories or correlates that underlie the apparent real. In this sense the film is an ironic plot that poses the irrationality of a rationality.
