A Tale of Two Races–Bob Hearts Abishola

I eventually realised that one cannot have a favourite tv program for so long as better tv programs keep emerging. Few years ago, my favourite TV program was "KumKum Bhagya", an Indian TV program. At this time, I didn't really have an option because this and many other Indian tv programs were my mom's favourite and until she slept off–which was rare–we had to watch them. One could say it was my favourite by proxy.

At first, when I saw the title of the sitcom "Bob hearts Abishola", I assumed that it was just another regular Nigerian movie because of the name "Abishola" and so I avoided it because the Nigerian movies I've seen in the past weren't worth the watch (no hard feelings). This movie kept accelerating on the Netflix trending list and so I decided to watch it.

Bob hearts Abishola is an American sitcom television series. The movie centres around a Nigerian nurse(Abishola) and the American sock icon( Bob), their work lives, relationship and culture . The movie begins when Bob got a heart attack and Abishola was the nurse in charge of him.

One reason why I like this sitcom so much is the fact that it perfectly portrays Nigeria's culture. This is shown in the parenting techniques, the food, the dressing, the accent, the music, basically everything. At first, I expected Abishola to have an American accent but when she pronounced water as wata and not wadder, I knew her accent was intact.

My Favourite Scene of The show

This was when Bob and Abishola decided to put their differences aside and have a wedding. Due to certain circumstances, they couldn't have the wedding in Detroit and so they flew to Lagos, Nigeria. The wedding scene was amazing! I got goosebumps from the start to the finish of this scene because everything was how it was supposed to be.

He was the brains behind the Maxdot socks company and Abishola's husband. At some point, I felt bad for him as he had to struggle to get Abishola's attention but in the end, it was worth it.

A Nigerian nurse who immigrated to Detroit for greener pastures. She always wanted to be a doctor and didn't want anything to come in between her dreams but soon enough, things changed. The once stone cold lady even became more tender and compassionate.

  • Guna Yashere as Kemi
  • Christine Ebersole as Dorathy wheeler
  • Maribeth Monroe as Christina
  • Travis Wolfe Jr. As Delete
  • Matt Jones as Douglas.

My Opinion

The sitcom was worth my time. I enjoyed every scene as I always got the joke. But there was one outstanding change. After the wedding scene, Bob Wheeler started to lose weight and his reason was that "he was eating healthier". Honestly, I got used to the plus sized Bob and when I started noticing the decrease in size, I just had to conclude that something was wrong somewhere.

So far, this has been my favourite mixed race TV program as the end of every episode always prompts you to watch the next. The producer(s) took time to carefully portray the culture of both races, creating an equilibrium; it wasn't too Nigerian or American.

I had a great time watching because I know about Nigerian culture and I also know some things about Americans. There are a lot of things about culture to learn from this TV program and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have a good laugh or anyone who wants to learn something new.

Great choice dear Wongi, I'm currently watching this show and I love every bit of it.

Where Bob first met Abishola at the hospital and their wedding ceremony in Nigeria are still my all episode favorite.
